Company Spotlight: Express One (continued from front page)
“When we opened our doors in 1995, we were the first national reseller for DHL Express,” said Marc, whose brother, Bret, founded the company and whose father, Larry, works with them on investor relations. When DHL pulled out of the U.S. market early this year, Express One and two other DHL resellers, negotiated sales agreements with Postal Service headquarters in Washington, D.C., making them extensions of the USPS sales force and allowing small to medium-sized businesses the lower parcel rates a larger mailer can get with volume discounts. “Our Express One sales force goes door-to-door telling people of the advantages of Priority Mail and Express Mail, and tries to switch people from UPS and FedEx,” said Marc. “The fact that there are no surcharges – no pick up fees, no fuel surcharge, no residential surcharge, etc. – are good selling points.”
Such partnerships are fairly new to the Postal Service. According to Robert Vunder, USPS Salt Lake City Manager of Customer Relations, an agreement like the ones the Postal Service has with Express 1 and United Shipping Solutions never could have happened before the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act was passed by Congress in 2006. “The new law allows us to negotiate pricing on package services. Before, prices were set by the Postal Rate Commission and there was no flexibility.”
Express One’s system for getting lower Priority Mail and Express Mail rates is easy to use. Customers simply log on to a program called E1Ship, which can be found at www.Express1.com. There, they print out the postage, attach it to the parcel and mail it. “Not only is it easy, but our system keeps a mailing history for you,” said Marc. “It costs our customers nothing at all to get these lower rates, or for us to consult with them. What we do is free to the customer.”
Currently, Express One has 16 active franchisees, a total of about 100 employees, and plans to grow their business as quickly as possible.
Besides increasing sales, Marc is an active member of the Utah Postal Customer Council and recently became a member of its executive board, as did fellow Express One employee Scott Hardman. “The PCC gives us an opportunity to personally meet with postal managers every month and share what we see in the mailing industry,” said Marc.
“We’re not high pressure sales people,” said Marc. “We enjoy what we do and we’ve been doing it a long time. If you are already using the Postal Service, we may not be able to help you. But if you are not utilizing Priority Mail or Express Mail, you may want to contact us. It won’t cost you anything and it might save you a lot.” To get in touch with Marc, you can contact him at 801‑944‑1661 Ext. 2718 or email him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
